About

The Lighthouse Keeper’s Wife by Charles Fourie is set on a remote South African coastline, where a lighthouse stands as both a guide to sailors and a symbol of isolation. The play centers on Stella, the wife of the lighthouse keeper, whose life is defined by routine, duty, and emotional confinement. Living far from society, Stella is expected to maintain the household and support her husband’s work, while suppressing her own needs and desires. As the play unfolds, Stella deep loneliness and frustration become increasingly visible.

The arrival of a stranger disrupts the rigid order of lighthouse life and forces Stella to confront the emptiness of her marriage and the limits placed on her as a woman. Through sharp dialogue and moments of tension, Fourie exposes the unequal
power dynamics within the relationship and the silent sacrifices demanded of Stella.

The lighthouse itself becomes a powerful metaphor: while it provides light and safety for others, Elsa remains trapped in darkness, yearning for freedom and recognition. The play explores themes of isolation, gender roles, desire, and personal agency, offering a compelling portrait of a woman caught between social expectation and her longing for self-fulfillment.
