Marabi

About

South Africa’s musical theatre classic – “Marabi” – returns on a high note. Set in the 1920s in Doornfontein, Johannesburg, the production follows Mabongo as he battles ancestral duty, poverty and the rising tide of change. His daughter Martha falls for Ginger George, a Marabi piano player, defying tradition and igniting family turmoil.
Age recommendation: 8
As recorded music threatens live performance, and war looms with hollow promises, Marabi explores the complexities of love, legacy and the rhythms that refuse to be silenced. It asks: “When the ancestors call, who dares to sing a different song?"

Sit tight for a theatrical experience that bridges the gap between different generations of performers, preserves history and culture, promotes positive role models and social cohesion.

Presented by Molepo Theatre Projects in association with The Market Theatre, “Marabi” is a Junction Avenue Theatre Company adaptation of Modikwe Dikobe’s seminal book, “Marabi Dance”.
