Set in Sophiatown against the backdrop of forced removals in the 1950s, The Suit is Can Themba’s most famous work. Adapted for the stage by Mothobi Mutloatse and Barney Simon and directed by James Ngcobo, the charming tale leads the audience through a dark tragi-comedy about infidelity, revenge and remorse.
Themba created the suit to be a character in its own right as a physical reminder of a dead romance. Siyabonga Twala playing Philemon and Zola Nombona playing Mathilda in this beautiful and poignant story about love and forgiveness, The Suit is testimony to why Can Themba’s rich legacy of uniquely South African stories continues to humanise us.
